My favourite comfort and happy movies and shows
I wanted to give you some comfort and laughing suggestions for tough days. The best is to turn the brain off to relax. Enjoying something heartfelt and lovely on the days that even the smallest things are a challenge. Plus some insights about me.
As a horror and action girl, not adding this is hard for me. But even I have my lovely movies and series that are lighthearted and fun for a lot of people to enjoy. Two actors I mentioned I grew up with, and they will have a special place in my heart.
So, I want to share these movies and series, sharing why they are so special for me. Be prepared to learn a bit more about me.
1. King of Queens
A series I grew up with, my father was always watching it. And Kevin James is one of the actors I mentioned above. I grew up with this man. My father and mom always watched everything with him, and so did I.
And this stuck with me, no one could make this man bad to me, he is my childhood. When I was in a tough time with my abusive ex-boyfriend in 2018, when he broke up with me and got back together almost weekly, I always had this show on at night. I couldn’t sleep, and since I knew all of the episodes in the back of my head, I had this on.
It gave me so much comfort and nostalgia since I grew up with this show. And with this actor.
2. Grown-ups
Adam Sandler is the second actor I mentioned above, and I grew up with, his movies were on in my home all the time as well. So, blame my family for my humor, haha.
But seriously, grown-ups one and two were on in my home. And my mom and I always loved watching it together. I think it’s my mom’s favourite comedy movie with Adam Sandler and Kevin James.
Speaking of Adam Sandler, he has a lot of really funny movies, and I like to watch them. There are so many good ones, 50 First Dates, Chuck and Larry, Pixels, and so many more.
If I can recommend another Adam Sandler movie that is a comedy but with a message and sadness, it is ‘Click’. This movie is from 2006. I can only recommend watching that movie and understanding the message it will show. I watched it when I was a child the first time, and I obviously didn’t get it, but when I did when I was older, the message it shows is actually really important for life.
3. 13 going 30
Meet the movie, I was like the main character, I always wanted to grow up. I was made fun of a lot for my personality and intelligence. I was always the ‘nerd’, the ‘smartass’; no one wanted to be friends with me. At just eight years old, I changed my entire personality, interest and everything depending on who I was talking with. A little girl who just wanted to be liked for who she is. But no one did.
The moment I was tested for ADHD at eight years old, and the woman who did this test with me told my family I don’t have ADHD, but a really high IQ above people my age, that I was bored in class and should skip two classes, and that they needed to invest, encourage, and promote all of this.
I was happy till I came home and my entire family laughed at me, not believing this, even when it was on paper. My father called me delusional and stupid, as if I could be smarter than anyone in my family. So, no investing, no skipping class, so the problem would change, no promoting this. Nothing. And my mom couldn’t do anything about the decision.
My room was in the attic, and I sat on the high staircase, crying, and remember it so well. ‘I wish I were twenty-one, married, and in my house.’ I never really was a kid in my family, but with eight, the rest of it died down on that staircase that day. I only wanted to be an adult.
And now, I wish more than anything to go back to that time, hug myself, and change everything. This movie holds a special place in my heart forever as well. I can understand Jenna so much, and I love the message of it, because it is something I learned as well, through my experience. Plus, having her wardrobe? Yes, please.
4. The Princess Diaries I & II
These two movies are my all-time favourites. I always dreamed of someone coming to me and just saying ‘You are a princess’, a girlish dream, I think a lot of young girls have.
I blame her for the sass I have, and I mean this in the best way! I always go back to these movies even when I could act them out without a script at this point. They have a dear place in my heart.
My grandma, who died on my birthday in 2021, gifted me the DVD of the first movie. Some got the movie for her, I remember it so well. She had this huge bag of DVD’s, and I am so sad someone threw them away since she wanted me to have them.
5. The Devil Wears Prada
I have watched that movie countless times already, and I plan to do it again soon with my mom, who has never watched it and always wanted to.
Not sure if this comes through on my page, but I am a little fashion girl, and my best friend and I are the overdressed and underdressed team. It always was like this, and she loves to point this out. It’s a part of me I was hiding a lot in the past as well, but I have embraced it now for years. I rock the stares because I am overdressed sometimes to go to the grocery store, and my best friend always loves it when I say, ‘I hope that looks good, I just put something casual on,’ and my best friend is like, ‘Casual? You look like you come from a business meeting or are going to an opera after this.’
It’s our thing, and it became a signature for us. Even when my style is mostly in the dark academia style. You never see me without my signature sunglasses when the sun is out (Mostly because it hurts my eyes, but that’s our secret, haha.)

6. Pretty woman
This was one of my mom’s favorite movies, and so I stumbled upon it because of her. And it became one of my favourites to watch as well, I always loved Vivan’s hair and always wanted to have her hair!
But I have straight, thick hair! She was the reason I considered a perm for so long, but I don’t think it would hold in my hair the same.
It’s another one of my favorites, which became one because of my mom. She always likes to watch it whenever it’s on TV!
7. The Big Bang Theory
I have this very interesting story with this series. My first boyfriend, when I was fourteen, loved this series. But because I had the entire situation happening at a young age, I mentioned above, when I was eight, I had this defensive reaction.
I always say, ‘Why would you watch something like that?’ I never watched with him; I was playing on my phone, but I was just bitter. Sheldon was acting a lot like I was (To a certain extent), but he had the friend group while I had to change myself. That was unfair for my teenage self.
I remember sometimes my real self came through, so my family and friends always compared me to two characters: Sheldon from this series and Spencer Reid from Criminal Minds. And I took so much offense in that when I was younger, because I knew my family was saying this to make fun of me, but my best friend was not. But it was so deep in me.
Now I am embracing it, my best friend is used to me spitting out facts and going on a side explanation from the topic we talk about for fifteen minutes till I realize it. And she just smiles and says, ‘No, it’s okay. That is interesting.’ And my family is used to the fact that I only drink coffee out of a certain mug; different mugs are for different drinking beverages. When I lived at home, my mom always plated the food for dinner except mine, so I could arrange it since she knew it had to be in a certain place. And my father got used to it when we all visit my grandpa, and he sits in my spot to move when I arrive. I swear it’s just quirks I have, I can’t change. (I never force someone to move off my spot by the way, I simply just don’t sit everywhere else but the floor then.)
But years later, I fell in love with the show, and I watched it a couple of times, even though I am more of a movie fan. I watched it at least ten times already, and loved it so much. It became one of my comfort shows, it’s funny, and you can turn off your brain and just enjoy it!
8. Criminal Minds
I think after what I wrote above, it was clear that this was coming. Even when I was too young to watch it, it was another show in my household when I grew up. Although not sure if this series is to blame for me reading psychology books at eight, always wanting to be an FBI when I grew up, and analysing serial killers.
I loved crime things, still do! Before I was even fourteen, I could tell my mom who all the people in the intro are in the background and what they did. I always annoyed my mom by guessing who the suspect was before anyone else.
My favourite character was Hotch. Unsurprisingly, Spencer was my second favourite. Although I still think they are actually splitting the first spot!
I had to choose this picture since my best friend loves to say we are like Morgan and Spencer. And it’s so true, so to honor this, I chose that picture.
It was a challenge to open up a bit, but I thought it would be nice for you to also get to know me a bit, on some of the movies and series I enjoy, and why. I gave a lot of stories with my best friend, I have known her for around thirteen years now, and she was the only one who never made me feel stupid, or that I had to change myself. She’ll listen to me going on random side facts and deep talk about the topic we are talking about for an hour. And when I apologize, it’s always the same sentences:
“It’s okay, I love listening!”
She is the only one who does it, even asking more since she knows it makes me happy.
Do you have any movies or shows you love watching in tough moments or that mean something to you in any way?
xx
Lena
