Romantizing boring tasks and routines in a fun way!

I think we all know the dreaded tasks we have to get done; it takes forever to get up and do them. But sometimes you just feel like doing your skin care is a chore, or doing the dishes is so dull. And I get this, I think we’ve all been there at one point in our lives where we find something we just don’t want to get done.

Luckily, these three tips I have can make it a bit more fun. I know they are different from other tips, but I thought the three fun things that make everything a bit easier for me, and for someone who was really done with everything two years ago, these tips helped me come back to things when I was feeling better.

Maybe they sound silly to some, yet I know sometimes creativity can become really fun when pairing it with the real world. As long as you obviously know that this is not the real thing. That is a disclaimer.

1. Add fun to a task or a routine

I think we all heard this or saw this, but I like to do this all the time, combining something fun with something dreaded. Who says you can’t have a dance party while doing the dishes? Or maybe you like to listen to an audiobook or a podcast. That is an obvious one.

But how about adding a fun outfit to the mix? A fun drink?

When I clean, for example, I love to watch some YouTube on my TV, something that doesn’t need me to pay a lot of attention but keeps me company. I love to watch vlogs from people I enjoy.

I love writing, but sometimes even I don’t have the mood to do this, yet it’s a routine for me. I think we can all agree, or at least most, on lighting a candle while writing? Perfect combination. Add a hot drink, a lovely tea, or hot chocolate? Count me in! It’s instantly something that can make me write for hours.

2. An imaginary camera

As someone who loves movies, one of the things that helps me do things I don’t feel like doing at the moment is to imagine an imaginary camera following me around. This sounds silly, but it really helps. Would you watch a movie with the main character just lounging around doing nothing? That would be boring.

And even when you do boring tasks, it can help make them a bit more enjoyable. One of the things I do, and I think a lot of women can relate to this: Imagine you are making a video when doing your skin care or make-up.

That is something I did when I was a teenager already (And I didn’t even have a skin care routine back then). It is fun to imagine doing a video for Vogue, with your skin care or makeup routine. I love doing this when I have a hard time with doing my skin care routine, even when I like doing it, sometimes I don’t want to. And since I was in a rough place two years ago, it took me a bit to get back to really taking care of myself, so this really helped.

I notice how much fun I have with that when I did my make-up on vacation last year with a friend on video chat while talking, don’t know what it is, but I feel like if I ever were to make videos, it would be talking random nonsense while doing skin care or make-up, haha.

3. Imaginary delusional scenarios (Or future manifestations)

Sometimes it helps to imagine you are not in the real world. For instance, when you hate cooking, you imagine you have your own restaurant and cook for your guests, or you are in a fantasy tavern when doing the dishes.

It makes it instantly more fun, or you could imagine what you are doing now with your manifestation. For example, sometimes when I do the dishes, I imagine doing the dishes in my dream house, imagine the view I want to have, talking to my best friend who visits me, and my future husband. And the dishes are done in no time.

I love nature, but sometimes have a hard time getting myself out of the house (Anxiety is annoying), so going on an adventure in the forest, as you see in movies and read in books? Sounds better than a ‘boring’ walk when you really don’t feel like going on it.

These are three tips I use to romanticise tasks that I don’t feel like doing, sometimes even the things you enjoy can get dull when you are used to them. So, sprinkle in some fun! It will always help get your mind at least on the task, but more often than not, it will make you enjoy everything much more than before.
