Summer hair care tips

As wished, I gathered all the tips I could think of for my hair! I have to admit, this has been in the making for a long time. If you want to read about my normal hair care routine and hair story, you can do so here.

This might be a longer post again, so before I make it even longer, we dive into it.

1. Coconut oil

When you checked out PART ONE, you know I am a huge fan of coconut oil for my hair, so I have to bring this in here, too. It helps with dry hair, letting it soak in before washing, which helps in the summer as well as in the winter.

But there is one other thing this helps with, put it in your ends, if you go swimming. It leaves a protective film on your hair from the pool, which will prevent it from drying out with the chemicals.

And it is easier to brush your hair afterward, at least I notice this whenever I do this. Even when I rarely go into the pool when we are on vacation. If I do, I swear by these tips and tell my family and friends, so they use my tips all the time.

2. Braid your hair in the pool, so you can have waves

That is two birds in one stone: it protects your hair and makes it easier to brush, while also giving you waves when your hair dries. I am a straight-haired girl who always wants to have curls. I think they are so beautiful.

And braiding them, letting them dry over the day, gives you some lovely soft waves that look wonderful. Especially if you are going somewhere or are on vacation, it’s a thing that is easy to achieve.

3. Don’t go in the pool with freshly dyed blond hair

Save yourself the heartbreak.

Even when your blonde dye is a few weeks old, I would always put my hair up when going in the pool, since green in your blonde hair will make it hard for you. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Although I can also understand when someone wants to enjoy the pool fully without worrying, with blonde dyed hair, this can get a little bad.

4. Greenish nightmare

I have Narciss Malfoy hair, so to speak, so you get an image. I have had this hair for almost three years (With the break, I am going to explain right here.)

Last year in July, I was on vacation where my hairdresser has her salon, and I always go to her when I am there. I dyed my split dye perfectly in April and gave it a break till July. But without even being in the pool, my blonde hair became green. One evening, I saw it and was completely stunned.

I found out that in the apartment complex, there can be chlorine in the water, so I knew I had a problem. This year, I have a different strategy since I have the same apartment, and it took me till March this year to finally get the red back out of my hair and have it back to the normal blonde split dye I love.

My hairdresser and I looked at the green in my hair; my hair was done. I made the hard decision to give it a break and dye the blonde red, so I had a black and red peekaboo hairstyle, which looked stunning too. But I love my black and blonde one more than anything. Just to give my hair a break, I decided to dye it red, and here is a warning: I had dyed my hair red twice, and it’s a full commitment. One time in 2018 and last year. If you don’t like it to be EVERYWHERE in the beginning, your bathroom looks like a murder scene every time you wash your hair, and it’s a full commitment to get that out of your hair. DON’T. I just got my red hair out and into my white blonde again.

But in case it happened to you, and the blonde turned green, here are some tips that could help.

  1. Talking to my hairdresser, she gave the tip: Ketchup.

If you have greenish hair from the pool, try ketchup. It’s a huge mess, don’t get me wrong. But it could help.

  2. Another thing is when you come from the pool, rinse your hair with water immediately. And use a clarifying shampoo, or a swimmer shampoo. Either you have luck and prevent it, or it can also help with the green.

  3. Vitamin C mask, be careful, this can damage your hair; it can dry it out. So, I would recommend only doing it when your hair is fairly healthy, or keep in mind that you have to do more afterward to help it with an eventual cut for dry ends.

  4. Another intense tip is: Hair color removal. Again, damaging your hair, I would recommend talking to your hairdresser. I used professional hair remover twice on my hair for the red. It’s definitely something someone shouldn’t play around with. So, disclaimer: I advise a professional hairdresser; go to them for this.

  5. Color theory, red or red-orange toner could be your best friend.

To be honest, all of these things are not worth the hassle; clip your hair up. I promise you, it’s the easiest and best for your hair. I would recommend doing this.

Disclaimer: If you have a hairdresser, always check in with them.

5. Protect your hair from the sun

This is such an important thing for your hair health, something I am doing. But I also stay away from the sun, like a vampire. I am so pale, I get red when I step into the sun, so this one is easy for me, haha.

  1. Hats and caps: I get a headache easily, and my hair heats up since it’s black or dark brown on top. Wearing one will help you and your hair. Especially if you have dark hair, you should always put on caps or hats; not only will it help your hair, but it will also help you.

  2. Sun protection spray for your hair, if you feel fancy and want to go the extra step, this is a good one: Pantene Pro-V Sunkiss Glow Hair Spray. It’s a good and affordable one, at least in my country, it’s not expensive. And I have been using it for a few months now. It has a nice smell, it doesn’t dry out my hair, and you can put it in, no matter if your hair is wet or not. I mostly do it in dry hair, since I wash it at night, and I have never had a problem; it doesn’t leave a greasy film, and I didn’t see that I have to wash my hair more often because of it.

6. Cute silk bandanas/headscarf

It’s another way to protect your hair, but you can also have a cute hairstyle, and I think especially summer is a great time for playful, lovely hairstyles. You can let your creativity run free with this one; it’s a lovely thing you can get creative with.

I have a collection of bandanas and headscarves. I find them so cute, it’s my favourite accessory, and I also use them on my neck as a little highlight. There are so many different styles with this one.

If you like, I have a board on Pinterest you can click here for.

7. Protective hairstyles

Protective hairstyles are important all year round, but in summer, with sun, swimming pool, ocean, and the climate in general, depending on where you live, it’s especially important.

There are so many ones you can do, I have some in my hairstyle board on Pinterest I linked above.

You can have them in braids, which I love to have. I grew up with my hair getting braided, and I can do them in my sleep at this point. Another good one is a clip-up, especially since this also helps with the heat as well. Plus they are so many cute clips to use.

I have thick hair, mostly waist or hip length, which is a nightmare in that weather. So, I am happy I cut them in September to my chin, but it’s already breast length again, which means a clip-up hairstyle is my best friend.

8. Sea salt spray

This is such a cute thing; it gives you hair textures. You can have beachy waves with this if you braid them. It gives you some texture for hairstyles, too, which can help depending on what type of hair you have.

Plus, it gives you this beach look that I really love. And volume! It’s best to use it on towel-dry hair.

Just make sure to take your hydration care seriously when you are using this; it can dry your hair out a bit.

9. Cute hair accessory

This is my favourite thing, sometimes hairstyles (especially updos with hairties) don’t work on me, they just fall again. So, I saved myself the hassle and worked around this. I do a lot of half-up, half-downs.

But another solution? Pretty things that make your hair pop, even with loose hair or easy, boring hairstyles.

  1. Cute hair clips, I love them, it adds creativity to your style.

  2. Butterfly clips, last year, I got a huge pack of different-colored butterflies, which are lovely; you can add them to braids, ponytail, or even in your loose hair. And they brought me back to my childhood.

  3. Hair jewelry, these look cute in your hair as well. There are so many different ones you can add to your hair.

  4. Small elastic hair ties that blend with your hair color for small sections of hair.

10. Manage summer and hair wash days

As I mentioned in the last post, you need to know your hair to know how often to wash it. This depends on your hair; some can wash it every day, some don’t. I can’t wash it every day, nor do I need it; I am lucky in that aspect.

But sweating in summer can always mess with hair wash days; sometimes I like to rinse my hair with water. It’s cooling for your head in the heat, yet it can also help with control. If you want to stick to your normal wash, I wash my hair twice a week in summer. This works the best for me, and I concentrate on hair hydration even on the other days.

These are ten of my summer tips; I always combine the tips I wrote in PART ONE with these here in summer.

What is important in summer is protecting your hair and hydration; with this, you are good to go.

I always love to know if you wish for some tips or posts, so you can always leave them in the comments!

xx
